Updated 7.3.08 H. Steven Robertson was a devoted husband and father. Larger than life, Steve was born in the middle of a hurricane in Tampa, Florida October 18th, 1944. Born in a storm, Steve lived his life as a force of energy that sought to pursue the journey of a renaissance man. Steve attended Newberry College in South Carolina on a full football scholarship. He obtained his Masters of Education at the University of Florida. A longtime resident of Neptune Beach, Steve worked as a public school educator for 37 years. He served as a teacher, coach, media specialist and assistant principal. His insight and dedication influenced hundreds of students he mentored throughout his life. Known to many as “Coach,” his leadership garnered many undefeated seasons of football, soccer, track and softball. An incredibly talented man, he was an established author, poet and artist. A master of all trades, he was a skilled carpenter, sculptor, chef, gardener and craftsman. There was nothing he couldn’t design, build or cultivate. As an expert diver and fisherman, he loved the outdoors and spent his life enamored with nature possessing compassion for all living creatures. A pillar of the beaches community, he was always the first to offer genuine kindness and a lending hand to anyone who needed it. Steve passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; daughters, Summer and Sunny; son-in-law Taylor and extended family. Steve will be greatly missed by his girls, his family, his friends and the beaches community. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, Sunday, July 6th at Jarboe Park and followed by a surf-out at the end of FL Blvd. with a celebration of his life continued at Ragtime Tavern in Atlantic Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Community Hospice for their devotion to families in their time of need. Steve Robertson has lived in the first coast community for over thirty-nine years. During this time he has been an educator in the Duval County School System and recently retired after teaching for 37 years. In 1998, he became involved with local author, G. W. Reynolds III of the "Jetty Man" series as a cover artist, editor and illustrator for his novels. Steve Robertson has had many ambitions in his life and one of his greatest was to become an author. In 2002, that became a reality with the publication of Ranch Boy. The youngster in the book moves to Sebring, Florida, finds a job as a cowboy on a ranch and wild, funny and captivating adventures ensue. Steve wrote his first poem at fifteen and became more or less prolific in the years that followed. The life long collection formed the basis for the second book of poetry, Acorns of Love and Wisdom. The third book, another novel - Bottom Time, was published shortly after and Robbie Duncan of "Ranch Boy" fame graduates from college and becomes a salvage scuba diver in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Between his daydreams back to college days and the adventures with the perils of the deep, the reader won't want to put it down. Next, Soccer Made Easy For Americans is a 'how to book' Steve published using his professional experiences as a soccer coach and player to teach all facets of the game. The Stream, his third novel, has been likened to works by Hemingway. A young fisherman's son makes some boyish mistakes and finds himself alone far out at sea with a dead motor. In the days that follow, he must struggle to survive. Don't miss the colorfully illustrated An Exercise Manual For the Couch Potato, Steve's really funny little book that pokes fun at being lazy. In mid-2007, Steve illustrated the colorful children's book, Peter the Pelican and Look Before You Leap. Next, look for Florida Boy's Down To Earth Country Recipes. ''In no way does Steve Robertson, at 6'4'' tall and 250 lb., fit the stereotypical image of the sensitive, soft-spoken poet. In fact, there's nothing delicate about the rugged, hulking frame of the coach/athlete, educator/author, except his heart. The compassion in Steve's heart is reflected in his poetry and his art. In ''Acorns of Love and Wisdom,'' a lifetime of experience is described in words of beauty, wonder, tragedy and triumph. With threads of love, humor, irony and elegance, Steve weaves a spell-binding tapestry of life.'' |
